Relocating to Malta

Do I really need to register in Malta?

Yes, as a foreigner, when you move to Malta to live and work, you need to register your residence. You will also need to get a social security number, tax number, Jobsplus number, new EU health card and a Malta ID card.

Is there a deadline for when I have to register in Malta?

Yes, you have to register your residence in Malta with the Identita authority latest 3 months after your first day arriving in Malta. Fines can apply if you breach this deadline.

In addition, you have to register your tax number and social security number as soon as possible. This is for your employer to be able to deduct the correct amount of tax and social security contributions on your payslip and to be covered by hospital treatments.

What is government red tape?

Red tape is when the processes in certain governmental requests take longer time than they should and are more difficult than they should be.

This results in filling out lots of different forms and registering at various different authorities plus an excess amount of rules that need to be followed.

On top of that, government officials are often not properly trained and breach EU citizen rights by asking for documents and information they are not entitled to ask for.

It can be really frustrating when you don’t know the local laws and EU citizen rights and delay your registration process for several months.

Does the Maltese government have a lot of red tape?

Yes, unfortunately. The various Maltese government authorities are known to have a large amount of red tape.

Even though Malta is highly improving when it comes to government digital services, this is not the case for foreigners relocating to Malta.

Different departments often make mistakes, don’t answer enquiries or it can take forever to get a response.

How long does it take to get fully registered in Malta?

It usually takes 3 – 6 weeks to complete your registration, if let us handle the many processes.

If you try to do the full registration process yourself, it can easily take 2-5 months for you to get properly registered in Malta.

Is it possible to relocate to Malta at any time of the year?

Yes, as an EU or EEA national you can relocate to Malta whenever you want.

What payment options do I have?

You can pay by bank transfer or online with a debit or credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Bancontact (Belgium), EPS (Austria), giropay (Germany), iDEAL (Netherlands) and BLIK and Przelewy24 (Poland).

Requirements to get the relocation package

How old do I need to be?

You need to be at least 18 years old to use the service.

Can I use this service?

The answer is yes if you are an EU or EEA national.

What is an EU national?

You are an EU national if you are from one of the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

What is an EEA national?

The European Economic Area (EEA) includes all EU countries and also Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. As an EEA national, you are entitled to register in Malta with the same rights as an EU national.

What is a third-country national?

You are a third-country national if you are not an EU or EEA national. If you are from the United Kingdom, you are seen as a third-country national. Currently, our service is not available to third-country nationals.

Do I need a rental agreement, before I can apply?

No, you can order the relocation package whenever you want to get the process started.

In order to get your social security number, tax number, Malta ID card, etc. you need to have a residential address in Malta. You cannot use a hotel, Airbnb or your employer’s address.

You will be asked to upload proof of your residential address. This can be your rental agreement or property purchase agreement.

Expats

What is an expat?

An expat is someone who moves abroad. It is a person who lives in another country than the country that they originate from.

How many expats move to Malta on a yearly basis?

On a yearly basis, around 10,000 expats move to Malta. Currently, more than 120,000 expats live in Malta and this number is growing exponentially.

Do you offer a referral commission?

Yes, we offer a referral commission for each sale made by using a discount code. The commission will be paid out by every month-end plus 30 days by bank transfer. Read more about how to become a partner.

Customer service

Do I need to contact other service providers to be able to relocate?

No, you do not need to contact other service providers to be able to relocate. We take care of everything that needs to be done regarding your relocation to Malta.

Is it possible to meet you in person?

When it is time for your Identita authority registration, one of our team members will meet you and assist with the registration process. Here you can ask all the questions you want while we wait in the queue.

Do you provide service 24/7?

We do not provide 24/7 service but we strive to reply to any of your inquiries within a day or two.

Can I call with a question?

In order to keep our package prices low, we do not offer telephone support. Instead, please write an email to us at hello@relocation.mt and we’ll get back to you shortly.

Can you help me with a bank account in Malta?

Yes, we will assist you in opening a bank account in Malta. It is part of the relocation package.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

How long is my information kept?

Your information is stored for 30 days after we have completed your registration process.

The purpose for storing your data is hereafter no longer present, and your personal data will be deleted automatically.

The only information we keep after this period is your invoice and transaction details. We are required by law to keep this information.

What are my rights?

In connection with the processing of your personal data, you have the right to gain insight into information that is processed about you, have incorrect information about yourself corrected and ask to have information about you deleted.

Can I issue a complaint about my data?

You have the right to lodge a complaint with the Office of the Information and Data Protection Commissioner in Malta if you are dissatisfied with the way your personal data is processed.

What is the purpose of processing my data?

Your personal data is processed in order to obtain your social security number, obtain your tax number, obtain your Jobsplus number, get your necessary documents for enrolling for Identita authority, book your meeting with Identita authority and helping you obtain the ID, register for your e-ID account, register your right to vote and getting your EU health card.

Which categories of information are stored?

Your name, email address, phone number, residential address, employment details, passport information, registration numbers with the Maltese authorities and the date on which you relocated to Malta.
